Hernando Cortés and the Spanish Soldiers Confront the Indians.

In Fray Diego Durán. La Historia antigua de la Nueva España. 1585 [Manuscript facsimile, ca. nineteenth century]. The fierce confrontation between the Spaniards under Cortés and the followers of Moctezuma received full treatment in Father's Durán's illustrated history of Mexico, compiled shortly after the early sixteenth-century conquest. The Mexica (Aztec) peoples confronted a powerful Spanish force supplemented by a sizable number of allies from the area surrounding Tenochtitlán [later named Mexico City] during the 1519-1521 campaigns. Durán's informants have skillfully distinguished Indian peoples from the European invaders, with a ghostly white image representing the Spanish. The Library of Congress acquired this extremely rare facsimile manuscript in the Peter Force Collection purchase in 1867. (Peter Force Collection, Manuscript Division)

Document creator/forger Mark Hoffman in 1985 presenting and fooling the top Mormon clergy with fake church history documents.

A Reddit description of the Hoffman events is as follows: 'Mark Hoffman is a sociopath, conman, and a murderer. He conned them, (fooled them) and uncloaked their “gift of discernment”. Mormon Leaders put themselves in unwinnable situations when they claim spiritual abilities that they don’t have, and when they attempt to hide things.' (They paid Mark Hoffman hundreds of thousands of dollars for his phony Joseph Smith history documents.)

1697: The Dawn of Tolerance in Massachusetts: Public Repentance of Judge Samuel Sewall for his Action in the Witchcraft Trials

Image and description by legislature.gov.

Milestones on the Road to Freedom
By Albert Herter, 1942
Oil on canvas, 110 x 130 in.
Gift of the artist and his son, Governor Christian Herter.
Unveiled December 16, 1942.
The widespread belief in witchcraft and the presence of the devil was swept into an outburst of confusion and accusation in 1692 when a small group of men and women of Salem (now Danvers) were arrested for bewitching their neighbors. Samuel Sewall (1652–1730), a local magistrate, was a member of the court that ultimately sentenced nineteen people to be hanged. The tragedy was realized several months later: those still being held were released, all judgments reversed, and records of excommunication expunged. At Sewall's urging, the General Court appointed a "Fast Day" during which all jury signed a confession of error in the convictions.
Sewall is seen standing in Old South Church in Boston with his head bowed as his confession and prayers for pardon are read aloud. Sewall is said to have fasted one day each year, praying for his soul and the souls of those wrongfully put to death. At the dedication of the murals, this event in particular was singled out as a turning point, for it represented "the beginning of the recognition of the 'quality of mercy' in human affairs."

The Crypt at St. Leonard's Church in Hythe, England.

The Crypt at St Leonard's Church in Hythe, England

This ossuary was first assembled in the 1670s.

It is believe to hold the bones of 2000 deceased persons who lived from the 13th to the 15th century.

There have been many theories as to who the people were and how they came to be resting in the crypt, although none of these have been proved to be true.

A 1787 drawing stated in a footnote that the bones were supposed to be those of 'Danish pirates slain in a battle' whilst a handwritten footnote on an 1860s illustration referred to them as 'men who fell in the Battle of Hastings (1066)'

A number of the skulls indicate breakages and injury, whilst others have evidence of disease from deficiencies and infection.

The bones were originally stored in preparation for new graves.
